We launched The Work Gym a little less than 65 days ago while participating in YCombinator’s Startup School.
We’re now at $6,000 in monthly recurring revenue, and our customers are extremely happy. We’ve got dozens of pages of happy testimonials like —
“I've been putting this off for three weeks and there's no way I would have done it if not on cycles.“ — Business Owner
“After an emotionally/energetically challenging weekend, this was really good structure to lean on to actually get things done. I wouldn't have worked today if it weren't for TWG. Work Cycles are always good. Need to schedule Cycles at least 3 out of 5 days a week (have these overlap with TWG as much as possible). Yay for TWG!” — Systems/Automation Expert
"TWG is already past break even for me cost wise and net positive ROI in a single cycles session." — Gabriel Stein, Entrepreneur; Sacramento, CA
How the Magic Happens:
Social Accountability + Lightweight Structure
(1) We start with some very basic setup before a multi-hour work session.
This helps people adhere to “known best practices” for work (defining completion before you start, knowing why you’re doing things, etc). It takes only a few minutes to set up.
(2) During a work session, you plan each 30 minutes out, and update your progress every 30 minutes.
You start by setting out what you want to be done in 30 minutes — which produces a surprising amount of both speed and clarity. When 30 minutes are up, you analyze the last 30 minutes and plan the next 30 during a short break.
(3) Social accountability via videoconferencing and moderation ties everything together.
For whatever strange reason, people tend to be far more willing to let themselves down than to let other people down — we harness that with some positive social accountability, having other people work alongside you.
A skilled moderator hosts the breaks and gives optional feedback. Currently, we offer four to eight moderated sessions per week; we’re working towards hiring and training to have great moderators available 24/7 so the Work Gym is always on.
End result? Attendees often report 200% to 300% performance gains. It’s really like… magic.
The biggest thing I realized is that when I focused during Work Cycles, I can get a workday done in 3 hours... By getting the work done in disciplined cycles, that then frees me up to work on bigger things, as well as showing me where I was wasting time in the past.
Glennn Holman, Consultant, Dallas, Texas
I was pleasantly surprised with my performance — at least 3x more productive than normal. I’ve read about productivity best practices and implemented some of them before, but you have to try something like this to really experience the benefits.
Neil Taylor, Commercial Director at Mobedia; London, UK
We’d be delighted if you’d check it out.
We greatly enjoyed Pioneer — big thanks to Daniel Gross and all our friendly competitors on the scoreboard. If you’d like to check out our tech, we’ll send you some free templates to get started.
We have some exciting features in the works, but you can use Work Cycles right away solo to be more focused at work — and of course, if you’d like to try out The Work Gym, we’d be delighted to have you there too.
As a programmer when I first heard of cycles I had some reservations. But after some real world experience, I went on to realize that if your tasks aren't divided into small enough pieces that they fit within 30 minutes, you probably don't know the problem well enough. So now I'm sold on using cycles for programming - it's saved me from a lot of wasted time and effort.
Han Chang, Programmer, San Francisco, CA
